Some basic rules that you need to memorize before playing Omaha eight or better would be:-
• The position you hold in a poker table in Omaha eight or better matters a lot in the selection of the kind of hand that you are going to play. In the first to act positions you need to decide to play with strongest starting hands, if you are in the late to act position before your betting turn arrives you will get some clue about the hand of the other players and you can decide accordingly.
• Playing tight and playing loose should be based upon your position and the number of players in the table. You tend to play loose in a multi player table and play tight in a short-handed table; however in Omaha eight or better with nut cards you can play loose, but you need to re-think playing loose if you do not have a strong hand in a multiplayer table.
• Every bet you place in Omaha eight or better should have a meaning and expectation. You should not bet for the sake of betting, instead your bet should be calculative based upon an expectation like with an 2-3-4-5 you should bet based on expecting an Ace in the community.
• Especially every of the post-flop bets in Omaha eight or better should be calculative and meaningful. If the bets are not based on a solid foundation you are likely to loose more money for your meaningless bets. If you figure your hand is not worth; folding is a great decision.
• There may be times in Omaha eight or better where you will be unsure about if you will have to bet or fold because you may be apprehensive about your hand, like you may be expecting to win based on an “if condition” like if your neighbor is not going to have this hand you will win. Folding at such times may lead to a loss. With a little information you will be able to decide if you should bet or fold. So, the amount of money you spend in a raise to get the information should be reasonable enough; the amount you tend to risk with bluffing should be reasonable.
• In Omaha eight or better when you are betting to get some information about the opponent’s hand, you need to be sure that your opponent will not doubt your motives based on the size of your bet. The bet should be the least, and yet should be enough to gather you the information you need!
