You need to have a photo ID with you too. You should take along your passport or drivers license. If you have a tourist card, this will work too. This is going to be your proof that you are allowed to visit Mexico and that you are a citizen of what country.
You should also take note of what is allowed to be taken to Mexico. These are a few of them: Personal Clothing, footwear, and toiletries in normal amounts. Magazines and books are allowed. You should drink bottled water and if not you should boil it. You should never drink tap water when you are staying. Always wash you fruits and vegetables before you eat them with bottled water.
