bWhile looking for the right accommodation for your traveling is important, that vacation rental you are thinking about should come second to having the right training and preparations for your hiking trip. You will need to be in good physical shape, but you may also want to consider some specialized types of exercise to prepare you.

Go Barefoot

Before you head out on your holidays prepare yourself starting with your feet. One thing to consider doing is to walk around the house barefoot. This helps to tighten the soles of your feet. While you will need good shoes and socks for hiking, you also need tougher skin. You can also use a product called Benzoin that can help protect your feet by helping them to harden over time. Keep it with you while backpacking because it is good for germ protection as well. If you end up with blisters, it is helpful to break them open and allow them to heal. Be preventive here by using a band aid or other product to protect areas where the blisters may show. That way, you minimize the risk. You also need to have properly trimmed toenails, not too far down.

Working Up The next thing to do is to work up to your stages in hiking. You want to get at least a mile or two to get yourself started. If you are fit then getting to five miles is a good goal when first getting started. Remember too that when you are hiking, you will be on uneven surfaces which makes a huge difference over walking along the sidewalk.

At five miles, you want to begin carrying a backpack with you while you work on increasing your endurance. Pack a small water bottle in it at first. You definitely want to use disposable bottles and properly throw them away when you are finished. You should also keep with you some replacement mineral filled foods. A sports drink can be helpful, too, but look for those that do not have a lot of extra sugars to them. While you do need sugars in your diet, some sugars found in sports drinks are not as healthy as they could be.

Be Prepared

The final item to work on when getting ready for your hiking holidays is to keep yourself prepared in terms of getting lost. A good choice is a GPS unit to take with you, if you know how to use it. The last thing that you want to do is to get lost. It is easy for your two hour stroll to end up causing a two day search for you if you are not prepared for what lies ahead. Do not give up on hiking believing it to be too difficult, though. The fact is it can be an enjoyable way to spend your day when you are prepared to do so. When you work yourself up to a longer hike, you will find yourself less likely to be injured, sick or even get cold and hungry.
