Some kitchens have L shaped work surfaces that is partly unusable because there is often cabinets hanging over them. Another reason for waste of space is the barrage of kitchen gadgets that we all accumulate (most of these are useful anyway!)
It might be worthwhile removing a kitchen cabinet as although you would lose storage space you may gain extra usable work surface area. This also makes your kitchen feel much bigger as there is more open space. It might also be possible to form a breakfast bar by enlarging that section of countertop.
